Abstract : | [Abstract] A classification of enamel opacities based on our long series of survey data which is proposed by making reference to the Murray and Shaw's criteria (1979) was used to determine the prevalence of enamel opacities in permanent dentitions in a fluoride area and a non-fluoride area ; 1,108 children in a fluoride area and 1,487 children in a non-fluoride area aged 13-15 years were examined. About 70% in the fluoride area and about 85% in the non-fluoride area had enamel opacities. Horizontal white lines in the enamel, stated to be pathognomonic of fluoride-induced enamel changes, were found in 39.0% of children in the fluoride area. In the non-fluoride area, however, 3.6% of children also had this enamel defect ; they lived in a area where the drinking water contained less than 0.15 ppm of fluoride, and none of them had received fluoride tablets supplementation. Therefore, it can be concluded that further studies are essential on the prevalence of these enamel defects and on the possible etiological explanation of these defects. |
