Abstract : [Abstract] The incremental lines or contour lines in the dentin of the primary teeth were observed by light and fluorescent microscopies. For identification of the degree of calcification of the fluorescent contour lines, several sections were observed by historadiography. The imbrication lines and contour lines of Ebner and Owen were observed as brown lines, and the lines of Schreger assuming a linear configuration by abrupt curving of the dentinal tubules under visible light. The imbrication lines assuming a brown color showed a distinct fluorescence when observed under ultraviolet light. However, in the dentin where no brown contour line was found when observed under visible light, some fluorescent contour lines were found under ultraviolet light. Moreover, some of the lines of Schreger corresponded to the fluorescent contour lines. Generally, no fluorescent contour line was found in the dentin formed in the prenatal period. The number of the fluorescent contour lines were zero to 15 in most of the cases. However, in some central incisors as many as 26 to 35 fluorescent lines were counted. The calcified striations and the lines of Andresen, neonatal lines and infancy rings were also examined.
