Abstract : | [Introduction] Health conditions due to high blood cholesterol levels are of increasing concern, leading to investigations of common substances which could lower the cholesterol levels. Tea catechins have been shown to inhibit cholesterol absorption in SD rats and rabbits suffering from experimentally induced alimentary hypercholesterolemia. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of tea catechins on fecal cholesterol. ExHC-Ta rats (obtained from Takeda Chemical Industries Ltd.) were used since they suffer from a form of hyperlipemia similar to that in humans. Oolong tea, green tea and black tea all contain similar catechins. Among them Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) and Epicatechin gallate (ECg) were used in this investigation as well as crude catechin extracts. [Materials and Methods] [Catechins] Green tea leaves were boiled and the clear (ester type) were eluted into a 60% acetone fraction by concentration gradient extraction with distilled water and acetone (15%, 30%, 60%) using the sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. |
