| Abstract : | [Abstract] This paper reviews the corrosion characteristics of two types of Ag-based alloy, Ag-Pd-Cu-Au and Ag-In-Zn alloys. The corrosion products on Ag-based alloy restorations analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are summarized and the factors affecting the in vivo corrosion behavior of these alloys are discussed. The corrosion of Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy proceeds in the oral cavity through the formation of metal sulfides in the presence of hydrogen sulfide ions (HS-), and an increase of Pd content is effective in improving the corrosion resistance. In contrast, the corrosion of Ag-In-Zn alloy in the oral cavity takes place through the formation of oxides of non-precious metals, such as In and Zn. Chloride ions (Cl-) contained in saliva significantly enhance the corrosion reaction to form In and Zn oxides on the alloy surface. Corrosion resistance and corrosion reactions of Ag-based alloys in the oral environment are very different depending on the chemical composition. |
