Abstract : | New concepts and theories evolved in the field of science often have a short life. Even the studies or works awarded with a Nobel Prize, or theories that have been accepted as being established, are subject to major modification or complete denial by new discoveries obtained afterward. On the other hand, fresh scientific findings can sometimes throw a new light upon an old theory that has been ignored for a long time. In this regard it is difficult to find a solid scientific concept capable of with-standing many challenges and of continuing to survive for more than 100 years. In this short review, two such concepts relevant to autonomic physiology will be discussed. |
