Abstract : | [Abstract] In this study, we have examined the expression of heat shock protein 72kDa (Hsp72) in the central nervous system of the adult rats to determine the effects of the condition of dental occlusion on the neuronal activities. Rats were randomly assigned to three groups: control, infraversion occlusion, and tooth extraction group. The experiment reached from postoperative 1 day to 7 weeks. Hsp72-immunoreactive neurons were detected in all major subdivisions of trigeminal nerve and in certain areas of the central nervous system related to the autonomic nervous system. Neurons with Hsp72-immunoreactivity were located in the nucleus of spinal tract, mesencephalic tract (5Me), and motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve (5Mo), and nucleus of the solitary tract (SOL), locus coeruleus (LC), amygdala (Amy), paraventicular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH), inferior olive, and area postrema. The temporal profile of expression of Hsp72 was different between the infraversion occlusion and tooth extraction groups. In the former group, expression of Hsp72 in LC, PVH, and AMY was progressively enhanced after 3 weeks, while that in the latter group was attenuated or disappeared at the same time. These results suggest that the dental malocclusion provokes a strong expression of Hsp72 in certain areas of the central nervous system, and therefore, it could be a cause of the autonomic dysfunction. |
