Abstract　： This work evaluated radiographically the presence and the conditions of endodontic treatment of 300 patients, correlating them with periapical alterations, through the examination of periapical, interproximal and occlusal X-rays contained in the records of patients who sought dental treatment in the clinics of the School of Dentistry of Bauru-USP, in 1983. The prevalence and the quality of the endodontic treatment, as well as the presence of radiographically visible periapical alterations, were analyzed. About one third of the individuals of the sample presented endodontic treatment. Six point four percent of the teeth analyzed had received endodontic treatment, and 33.1% of these teeth exhibited radiographic signs of periapical alterations. Fifty six percent of the endodontically treated teeth were partially obturated or overfilled. Forty two percent of the teeth without endodontic treatment exhibited periapical lesions. The largest incidence of periapical alterations in endodontically treated teeth was verified in overfilled canals (52.6%). The percentage of unsatisfactory endodontic treatments is very high, as well as the demand for that type of treatment. It is necessary to give more attention to endodontics courses at universities, in order to improve the technical quality of treatments, as well as to increase social awareness of endodontics, representing an alternative to exodontics.
