Abstract　： This report concerns a case of advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma showing complete response to treatment which was a combination of external radiotherapy(ERT)and chemotherapy using UFT and cisplatin(CDDP)(modified FP therapy). A 58 year-old man had an oral carcinoma extending from the right buccal mucosa to the lateral wall of the pharynx and soft palate. Two right submandibular lymph nodes measuring 15 mm in diameter were suspected of metastasis(T4N2bMO). After ERT(total 45 Gy), chemotherapy was initiated. Each course consisted of doses of perioral UFT(400 mg/day)taken on consecutive days, together with an intravenous CDDP(14 mg/m2/day)injection for five consecutive days a week followed by two weeks of cessation. A total of four courses of chemotherapy were administered. The patient experienced anemia(hemoglobin 8.7 g/dl), leucopenia(white blood cell count 1700/μl)and hearing impairment complicated by the modified FP therapy. After chemotherapy, the bone marrow suppression was reversed but the bilateral hearing impairment remained. After completion of the modified FP therapy, the clinical efficacy was evaluated as a complete response(CR). Histological evaluation of the therapeutic effect was Grade IVb. After the modified FP therapy, an additional ERT(30 Gy)was delivered to the primary lesion and the neck region. The tumor was controlled up to 13 months after the therapy with no recurrence or metastasis. Unfortunately, however, the patient committed suicide due to family trouble.
