Abstract : | This study was performed as a part of a collaborative project for dental caries prevention organized by dental colleagues in Japan, China and Korea. To assist with the establishment of a dental caries prevention program using fluoride in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, China, we determined the fluoride level of food and beverages commonly consumed in the city. The fluoride content of similar food and beverages produced in Japan were also determined, and compared with those obtained in Nanchang City. Fluoride levels in food after incineration and in beverages were assayed by the microdiffusion method using acidhexamethyldisiloxane. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows: (1)The fluoride content of vegetables, beans, grains, fruit, seaweed and meat from Nanchang City did not differ greatly from that from Japan. (2)The fluoride content of powdered infant formula from Nanchang City(0.49-2.17μg/g)was slightly higher than that from Japan(0.14-1.14μg/g). The fluoride content of infant food from Nanchang City(0.01-2.33μg/g)was similar to that previously reported for infant food from Japan. (3)The fluoride content of commercially-available oolong tea from Nanchang City(1.40μg/ml), Chinese green tea and jasmine tea consumed at the Jiangxi Medical College(0.38μg/ml), and soymilk obtained from Nanchang city(0.19μg/ml)was slightly higher than similar products from Japan. These results, together with those of previous studies in Nanchang City measuring the fluoride concentration in drinking water and the 24-hour urinary fluoride excretion suggest that the fluoride intake from food and beverages in this area is low. Therefore, we recommend the availability of a systemic fluoride supply to Nanchang City inhabitants, such as through fluoridation of water or salt. |
