Abstract : | The usefulness of node-strut analysis for the assessment of the trabecular continuity of cancellous bone was evaluated. 10 mm thick cancellous bone of the human lumbar spine was changed in 5 steps without changing the total thickness by serially replacing sections of the bone blocks to the soft tissue phantoms, and standardized radiograms were imaged. The digital radiographic data of the lumbar spine were processed with a median filter, morphological filter and selective skeleton filter. The extracted binary skeletal patterns were analyzed by node-strut analysis quantitatively. The number and length parameters of node-strut analysis showed changes in agreement with changes of the cancellous bone thickness. Therefore, it was suggested that changes in the continuity of the binary skeletal patterns extracted by morphological filter can be quantitatively analyzed by node-strut analysis as changes in the numbers of Nd and Tm and the length of strut. |
