Abstract : | The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of low intensity pulsed ultrasound on periodontal wound healing after flap surgery. The menial roots of the lower fourth premolars from 4 beagle dogs were used. After mucoperiosteal flaps were reflected and bone defects were created, the flaps were repositioned and sutured. Animals in experimental group was exposed daily for 20 minutes to low intensity pulsed ultrasound, which was continued for 4 weeks. After the experiment, tissue samples were dissected out, and sections were prepared for histological analysis. The experimental group showed greater regeneration of both cementum and bone than in the control group. These results suggest that periodontal ligament cells and osteoblasts responded to mechanical stress of low intensity pulsed ultrasound and that the ultrasound accelerated processes of periodontal wound healing after flap surgery. |
