Abstract : | [Abstract] Samples of orthognathic surgery cases with facial asymmetry were investigated, and both the skeletal and the dental asymmetries were analyzed. Dental cast models and PA cephalograms obtained from 77 orthognathic surgery cases were utilized. The skeletal asymmetry of the mandible was analyzed with PA cephalograms. The dental asymmetry was evaluated by measuring the dental casts three-dimensionally on an articulator. The relationship between the skeletal and the dental asymmetries was examined. Mandibular asymmetry was mainly characterized as lateral displacement of the chin. In relation to mandibular lateral displacement, the following patterns of dental asymmetry were revealed. The occlusal table on the displaced side was inclined more buccally for the upper arch and more lingually for the lower arch in comparison with the opposite side. The frontal occlusal plane at the second molar was inclined toward the displacement side in both the upper and the lower arches. For the upper arch, the arch width on the displaced side was larger than that on the opposite side. These relationships between the skeletal and the dental asymmetries did not appear in those cases where the mandibular prognathism was excessive but were prominent in those cases where it was moderate. In orthognathic surgery cases, it was demonstrated that mandibular asymmetry is a common finding and that it is strongly related to dental asymmetry. |
