Abstract : | [ABSTRACT] Porphyromonas gingivalis, black-pigmented anaerobic bacteria (BPAB), has been implicated as the primary periodontopathogen. In companion animals, Porphyromonas gulae were found to be the most frequently isolated BPAB associated with canine periodontitis. We detected the fimbrial structure on P. gulae strains from subgingival plaques of individual dogs by electron microscopy and sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The molecular mass of fimbrial proteins from all strains isolated was approximately 41K, as estimated by SDS-PAGE. The components of the fimbrial structure (fimbrillin) of isolated strains had the same size and amino terminal sequence as P. gulae 51700, however in antigenicity, the two strains revealed different immunologic reactions. These results suggest that P. gulae fimbrial subunits have antigenic heterogeneity among strains and that these differences may be important in the function and immune reactivities of fimbriae. [INTRODUCTION] Porphyromonas gulae is a black-pigmented, asaccharolytic, anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, gram-negative, rod-shaped organism. |
