Abstract : | [ABSTRACT] Congenital epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a disorder in which light external force on the tissues of the skin or mucosa causes erosion, inflammation, and/or blistering of the tissues. Gradually, cicatricial tissue replaces the normal tissue of the skin and mucosa. As the cicatricial tissue atrophies, people suffering from this disease have difficulty opening their mouths and they have difficulty with oral hygiene. Here we describe a case in which we have managed the oral care for a person with EB for 11 years. We supplied special tooth brushes with soft bristles to make it possible for her to clean her teeth and other parts of the oral cavity, especially the buccal surfaces of molars, without damaging mucosa or gums. Adhesions have continually formed on these buccal soft tissues. The atrophy of the cicatricial tissue around her mouth interferes with her ability to open her mouth. Regular professional oral care is mandatory. [INTRODUCTION] EB is a genetic disorder in which the skin and mucous membranes are easily injured by light external force. |
