Abstract : The development of nasopalatine ducts and of the secondary palate, the fate of the fused epithelial margins of palatal shelves in man, and the vascular network in the junction area between the medial nasal process and maxillary process and in the palatal raphe area in the stage when the tear for cleft formation could take place are briefly mentioned. The variable types of cleft lip and/or cleft palate were studied histologically. The post-fusion rupture of the lip and palate for cleft formation is discussed from the stand-point of, 1) the relation of the remnants of nasopalatine ducts to a cleft in the primary palate, 2) the meaning of the presence of the epithelial remnants, which are derived from the epithelial wall in the palatal raphe, at the edge of the cleft palate, 3) the hemophilic condition of the normal embryonic blood before the 12th week of gestation, 4) epithelial healing after tissue breakdown, which takes place in the 13th week. Possibility of cleft formation which does not kill the fetuses due to blood loss under hemophilic condition is explained.
