Abstract : Since Angell, the expansion of dental arches with screws has been used to avoid tooth extraction in orthodontic procedures. Recently, Korkhaus introduced the new concept of expansion of mid-palatal suture with orthopedic force. It means the spread of the apical base in compression anomalies. Thereby, the limit of orthodontic treatment -hitherto subjected to restriction by the contention of Lundstrom-has been extended. A few cases treated with rapid palatal expansion method were demonstrated. Two cases showed the parallel expansion of upper dental arches without pain. But in the case of the older patient (22 years of age), the mid-palatal suture did not open radiographically. On the contrary, she complained of much pain. This fact pointed to the age limit in the rapid palatal expansion. Nevertheless, the rapid expansion method in orthodontic treatment is very useful in many respects.
