Abstract : There is general agreement that the ideal terminal aim of endodontic treatment is the complete obuturation of the root canal space. Even when most of the endodontic procedures are completed, the last step, i.e., the total obuturation of the root canal space-usually filling the space with a silver cone or guttapercha cone together with root canal sealers, is very difficult. This step is very important. When using either the single cone or lateral condensation techniques, the most important and difficult step is to fit the main cone tightly to at least the apical third of the root canal in the three dimensional sense with no overextention and no remaining dead space in the root canal. In other words, no overfilling, no underfilling and no voids are permitted. For the completion of this ideal goal, the endodontist must ascertain the exact root canal length and the exact fitting of the silver or guttapercha cone before it is to be sealed.
