Abstract : Necrobiosis, a physiologic degeneration, takes place in many parts of the body. It occurs very remarkably in the digit formation. However, no report has been published as to necrobiosis for sulcus formation in morphogenesis of the molar. For this reason necrobiosis for digital formation of the rat embryos ranged in age from 14 to 19 days was examined for preliminary study of morphogenesis of the intercuspal valleys in the molar. Mitoses took place not only in the tip ectoderm of the digit but in the interdigital area. Necrobioses were observed not only in the ectoderm but in the mesenchyme of the interdigital area. No degenerative aspect was seen in the tip ectoderm of the digit except for a very slight degeneration which took plac temporally at the 15-day stage.
