Abstract : An anaerobic streptococcus (strain K47) isolated from human dental plaque resulted in accelerated periodontal bone destruction and tooth decay when inoculated in gnotobiotic rats harboring S.mutans GS5. This anaerobic streptococcus could not be established in the germfree animals alone, or together with the strain S.salivarius SS2. Biochemical and serological tests indicated this organism could not be strictly categorized in any of the Peptostreptococcus species listed in Bergey's Manual, nor into the groupings suggested by Thomas and Harre.
