Abstract : [Abstract] Wistar strain rats were sacrificed to study the influence of orthodontic stimulation on local metabolism and cellular activity. Biochemical and histological investigations in vivo were performed using radioactive sodium succinate as a tracer. Following the tooth movement, radioisotopes were injected intraperitoneally at various intervals before decapitation. The difference in distribution of radioactive metabolites with time was counted in periodontium and the adjacent alveolar bones of both stimulated and non-stimulated animals. Orthodontic force applied to a tooth accelerates the local metabolism in the tooth supporting tissues. The metabolic activity of periodontium is apparently greater than that of the alveolar bone. The cellular metabolic activity in the tension side is greater than that of either the control group or the pressure side.
