Abstract : [Abstract] The samples examined were 2,424 noncleft fetuses and 40 cleft fetuses, ranging in age from eight to 25 weeks. Correlation of sex to type of cleft, mortality rate and incidence of associated anomalies was examined. There was no apparent correlation of type or degree of severity of cleft with type or severity of associated malformations ; likewise, nor was there a correlation between sex and associated anomalies. The mortality rate of males was apparently higher than that of females throughout the fetal period, whether the samples were cleft or not. As to the mortality rate of noncleft samples, in general, the number of aborted males was larger than that of females regardless of age. However, the aborted number of cleft males was somewhat smaller than that of cleft females before the 13th week, while it was somewhat larger after the 13th week compared with that of cleft females. Cleft lip with or without cleft palate occurred most often in males, while cleft palate alone occurred more frequently in females.
