Abstract : [Abstract] The detection of bacterial contamination in toothpastes has been studied in the present work. Many of the toothpastes used daily were alkaline ranging from pH 8.0 to 10.3 (21 out of 27). Bacteria were found in seven out of 27 products by employing the enrichment cultivation using bouillon. And bacteria were detected in four out of 27 products with the cultivation using pour plates. The bacteria detected from the solid medium seem to be pure cultivation, and they had common characteristics that were isolated from different products. They seem to resemble the organisms in Alcaligenes. The total bacterial counts were from 15×102 to 24×104 in 100mg toothpastes. The counts depend on the products. Even in the same brand, there were both bacteria that contaminated the products and non-contaminating ones. The level of pH of the toothpastes did not show any change upon reexaminations after about one to three years later. It was also recognized that the bacteria can live for a long time in the toothpastes.
