Abstract : [(1) Preface] It is impossible in the mouth to apply the compression bandage in the same way as on the other parts of the body, since neither elastic material nor adhesive tape is not usable there. On account of this, the conventional practice for the oral wound is to pile many small strips of gauze on it and to give compression by making the patient keep biting them. During the application of this method, the patient can neither speak nor eat. Therefore, the application is limited only to a relatively short period, which constitutes the main fault of this method. Sometimes a thin plastic plate, which is molded to fit teeth near the wound, is used to give lasting compression on a pile of few strips of gauze. But this method has also disadvantage that when the pile of gauze is sufficiently thick to give compression, the fitness of the plastic mold to teeth is so much lost, causing it to be detached. Consequently, the degree of compression is limited in this method. Moreover, the gauze is left stained by food.
