Abstract : [Abstract] An examination of 774 children, nine to 14 years old, in Miura, Kanagawa Pref., Japan, in which the fluoride content of drinking water was less than 0.18 ppm and no fluoride pollution was recognized was carried out. This study revealed that 35.3% had clinically obvious mottlings, 5.3% had enamel hypoplasias, and 4.8% had both enamel defects in their permanent teeth. Restricting the study only on the children with several or more of these defects distributed symmetrically in the dentition, however, 11.6% had mottlings, 1.8% had hypoplasias, and 2.3% had both defects symmetrically in their dentition.
