Abstract : Differential diagnosis between dental fluorosis and non-fluoride enamel mottlings, especially in milder forms of these defects, has not been established clearly. Merely, a standard proposed by The National Institute of Dental Research (USA), an advocacy by Diefenbach et al. and others have been reported. In our laboratory, a series of investigations with the appearance of teeth in two fluoride areas (1.1-2.0 ppm F) and two low fluoride areas (0.08-0.24 ppm F) in Japan has been continued to establish the differential diagnosis between fluoride and non-fluoride enamel mottlings. From the present results of this study, the differential diagnosis of these enamel defects established in our laboratory is summarized as follows. The general principles of our diagnosis designated in Table 1 are similar to the ones proposed by NIDR for the most part. There are, however, some items different from the NIDR diagnosis. It will be necessary to confirm whether these differences exist only in Japan.
