Abstract : [Abstract] Three-dimensional examination of Hunter-Schreger bands in the upper premolars is carried out by the replica technique. The spiral or concentric arc structures found in the cusps of the premolar coincide with Hunter-Schreger bands. The fact that the center of vortex bands exists in each of the major cusps of the premolar strongly suggests that the vortex, the center of which is located in a presumptive top of the cusp before enamel matrix is formed, should exist as an invisible prepattern by which enamel matrix formation is conducted. Further a center of the vortex found in the line angle of the premolar suggests that organic matrix is formed in that particular area independently from the major cusp.
