Abstract : [Abstract] Incidence of cleft lip in A/Jax strain mice is 11%, while that of CL/Fr strain mouse is 28%. Normal development of the primary and secondary palate in these strain mice is briefly mentioned. The variable types of cleft lip and palate of the fetuses of these strains are studied histologically. Interesting cases of cleft lip and palate in these strains, e.g. Simonart band, isolated cleft palate, etc., are explained. Pathogenesis of cleft lip or palate in mice is discussed from the standpoint of primary non-fusion and post-fusion rupture. Cellular degeneration and rodent cavities of tissue are the main causative factors which are related to dropdown of the palatal shelf, primary non-fusion and post-fusion rupture. A simple rodent cavity is mainly related to primary non-fusion while complex or multiple rodent cavities are mainly related to post-fusion rupture or severely defected cleft lip. Epithelial regeneration on the cleft part mesoderm in the mouse fetuses would begin to take place probably at the 11 days stage.
