Abstract : [Abstract] Pertinent information is currently needed in the treatment of patients with mandibular dysfunction of the masticatory system. It seems to be an established fact that mandibular dysfunction has a multifactorial etiology. Moreover, systematic studies are being made for more information on epidemiological surveys such as signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction in the non-patient group. This study was, therefore, made through questionnaires sent to young adults on signs and symptoms of masticatory dysfunction, and successively, their maximum mandibular openings were examined. Results showed that most of them felt pain or discomfort in the temporal or TMJ region after one minute of voluntary tooth clenching. This evidence supports the fact that mandibular dysfunction is caused by muscle hyperfunction in the masticatory system. The mean value of the max. mand. opening was 52.0 mm with SD 5.8 mm for males, and 47.5 mm with SD 6.1 mm for females. These values showed statistically the significant difference (p<0.01) between the two adults groups. Therefore, the results are useful for clinical diagnosis of patients with mandibular dysfunction.
