Abstract : [Abstract] The oxytalan fiber network of the molar periodontium associated with the vascular system, distribution of the network in the gingiva and its connection to the vessels in the mandible of rat, monkey, mouse and human were studied. The oxytalan fibers are oriented so as to form an interlacing network connected to the vasculature distributed around the root. This network is suspended from the gingiva by connecting to another group of oxytalan fibers crossing through Sharpey fiber bundles in the gingiva. It is reinforced with the fibers running from within both the cement and alveolar bone and functions as a strong retainer of the vascular system which becomes very unstable under pressure of mastication. The comparative anatomy of the fibers and mode of connection of the fibers to the vessels are discussed.
