Abstract : The hot salt sterilizer recommended by Grossman, Ingle and others, is extremely valuable for sterilization of intracanal instruments. However in a high humidity country such as Japan, it is undesirable to use this sterilizer due to caking of salt which causes difficulty of an inter-position of the intracanal instrument. Therefore, the authors attached a vibrator to this apparatus in an attempt to remove this drawback. By applying vibration, the hot salt begins circulation in the metal cup of the apparatus and caking is prevented. In addition, temperature of the hot salt in the metal cup is kept uniform. The sterilization effect of this apparatus against microorganisms is superior to ordinary equipment. We already manufactured the apparatus on trial and reported in The Japanese Journal of Conservative Dentistry in 1975. However, vibration noise and temperature variations caused additional trouble. Consequently the authors newly designed and completed an available apparatus. Several experimental studies to evaluate this apparatus were carried out from a thermal and bacteriological viewpoint.
