Abstract : [Abstract] Specimens were removed from the inner epithelium of the buccal gingiva of 15 adult mongrel dogs. All specimens were taken from gingiva which appeared free of inflammation. By using both TEM and SEM, this investigation revealed that fenestrated blood vessels existed beneath the entire inner epithelium from the gingival crest to the apical end of the junctional epithelium. The fenestrated blood vessels accounted for approximately 40% of the total number of blood vessels observed beneath the inner epithelium. The fenestrated blood vessels were observed more frequently in the gingival crest where we also found more fenestrations per vessel. The fenestrations are round in shape, 600-800 A in diameter, and can be observed in extremely attenuated areas of the endothelial cells. Almost all of the fenestrations were found facing the inner epithelium on the opposite side of the nucleus of the endothelium. These fenestrations are closed by a thin diaphragm which occasionally displays a central electron opaque spot (central knob). Since fenestrated blood vessels permit a rapid transfer of large intravascular molecules, we think that the presence of these blood vessels beneath the inner epithelium is responsible for producing a flow of gingival fluid into the sulcus in response to physiological stimuli and inflammation.
