Abstract : [Abstract] Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from an abscess of a female patient who developed repeatedly 21 abscesses within a period of five months. Together with investigating the characteristics of St.aureus, on the one hand, isolation of Staphylococcus from the oral cavity of the patient was carried out and the characteristics of the organisms were compared. It was discovered that St.aureus of abscess origin had the characteristics of mannitol, galactose and lactose fermentation, gelatin liquefaction, coagulase activity and DNase production, hemolysis of human, horse, bovine, sheep and rabbit blood. Through antibiotic susceptibility tests, it was found strongly susceptible to tetracycline but resistant to penicillin. Based on the results, the patient was treated with tetracycline and recovered within a short time. In examining the staphylococci isolated from the oral cavity of the patient, numerous St.aureus cells were detected but the staphyloccal cells differed from St.aureus of abscess origin in biochemical characteristics (galactose, lactose fermentation negative, no DNase production, hemolytic activities and etc.). Therefore, it was difficult to determine the origin of the St.aureus responsible for abscess development in the oral cavity.
