Abstract : [Abstract] Dissected mandibular bone fragments which contained the first molar buds from 17 to 19 day mouse fetuses were transplanted to the dorsal subcutaneous space of the same strain adult mice. Of 47 grafts, 23 were harvested (48.9%) 30 to 32 days after transplantation. Of 23 molars harvested, 16 molars showed root formation (34.0% of the transplantation). In well-developed molars, not only the dental hard tissues but also the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were formed. However, partial hypoplastic enamel and irregular or osteoid dentin formation took place in many cases. Partial aplasia of the enamel was noticed in some cases and malformed or thinner dentin formations were found not only in the crown but also in the root in some cases. In two cases, the crown was erupted in a large keratocyst, and epithelial attachment was almost established.
