Abstract : [Abstract] The amount of retained fluoride and the urinary output of fluoride from a topical fluoride solution were studied in young adults, who were treated with topical fluoride by an applicator, the Air-Cushion Fluoride Tray. As referential study, the urinary excretion of fluoride from direct ingestion of fluoride was also investigated. No difference was found in both fluoride retention and urinary fluoride excretion between mandibular and maxillar therapy. Fluoride absorption by the body is probably dependent upon the amount of fluoride solution used. The more the amount of fluoride solution, the more the retained fluoride. However, even though 3 ml of a 2% NaF solution is used, fluoride absorption by the body will be less than 2 mg of the fluoride (as F). In the ordinary topical fluoride technique using an Air-Cushion Fluoride Tray, only about 1 mg of the fluoride (as F) is absorbed by the body.
