Abstract : It has been pointed out that bleeding from the gingiva is the most frequent of intraoral bleeding. Pockets of interdental papillae are considered to be special locates for the hemorrhagic tendency. The reason for the common occurrence of gingival bleeding is that the gingiva is rich in capillary networks and lacking in elastic fibers. The mechanism responsible for the tendency of gingival bleeding is now considered to be an anatomical characteristic - that the gingiva lacking submucosa contacts the teeth directly and closely attaches itself to the alveolar bone through the periosteum. The correlation between this hemorrhagic tendency and the ultrastructure of blood vessels lying beneath the inner sulcular epithelium may be of fundamental importance to our understanding of gingival bleeding dynamics. The purpose of this study is to find whether there is a correlation between this hemorrhagic tendency and characteristics of the blood vessels in the gingival area, particularly beneath the sulcular and junctional epithelia.
