Abstract : [Abstract] Testosterone (T) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) concentrations in the rat submandibular gland (SMG) were measured by specific radioimmunoassay. SMG was obtained from male and female Wistar rats 0 to 10 weeks of age. T and DHT values in male and female SMG were low in rats less than 3 weeks of age, showing below 4.5ng/g. At 4 weeks of age, T levels greatly increased, revealing 15.1+-6.3ng/g for males and 18.4+-6.6ng/g for females. Thereafter, T concentrations in male and female SMG decreased to 3-5ng/g in rats from 5 to 10 weeks of age. DHT concentrations in both male and female were shown to be approximately 1.5-3 times higher than T at this period. The weight of male and female SMG increased remarkably at 4 weeks of age. From these results, it was concluded that no sexual difference existed in androgen concentrations in rat SMG, and that DHT began to accumulate at around 4 to 5 weeks of age. Furthermore, it is speculated that androgen plays a role in the growth and development of rat SMG.
