Abstract : [Abstract] This is a review of background information on developments in the measuring system for mandibular motion. As is well known, there have been a great number of studies analyzing human mandibular movements but recent innovations in electronic engineering and application of data processing have allowed the development of a more refined and accurate apparatus capable of measuring the motion of the mandible in three dimensions. This paper is mainly based on studies conducted at our departments in recent years. Two major topics are discussed and presented as follows; Part I: Problem Areas, Part II: Development of the Measuring System. A perspective of our studies for establishing the advanced system is also presented.
