Abstract : [Abstract] Ten human fetuses and embryos ranging in age 39 days to 13 weeks were used. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin. Except for a 90mm-stage fetus stained with H-E which was cut sagittally, frontal serial sections were made 7 to 18μm thick and stained with H-E or Azan method routinely. For some of the samples, two-dimensional graphic reconstructions were made to observe the distribution of palatal muscles and their innervation. The following results were obtained. The mtvp develops earliest among the five palatal muscles. The anlagen of mtvp, mpp, mlvp, mpg, and mu are identified as a group of myoblasts at the stage of 20mm, 25mm, 37mm, 45mm, 65mm in CRL, respectively. A pair of mu anlagen are united at the 65mm-stage. The mpg, which is derived from the tongue musculature, attaches to the soft palate at the 71mm-stage. The mtvp is innervated by the n. mandibularis. The mlvp is supplied with two different nerves: one from the plexus pharyngeus which also innervates in the mpp, the other from the nn. palatini minores. The mu is supplied with the nn. palatini minores.
