Abstract : [Abstract] A series of surveys was conducted from 1980 through 1982 on the prevalence of dental caries in different tooth surfaces among children aged 1 year 6 months, 2 years 6 months, and 3 years 6 months, all living in Yokosuka, Kanagawa. At the same time, their deciduous dental spaces were examined to find the occurrence of interdental spaces with age and its relationship with proximal caries. The findings led to the following conclusions: 1) The prevalence of dental caries was lower than that in the results of earlier surveys. 2) The occurrence of deciduous interdental spaces tended to increase with age in the incisor region, while the occurrence of such space in the distal region, including the primate space, tended to decrease with age. This tendency was particularly marked in the space between the first and second deciduous molars, which had virtually disappeared by 3 years 6 months. 3) A significant percentage of children with no interdental space was affected by proximal caries.
