Abstract : [Abstract] Forty-eight female mice of CL/Fr strain were intraperitoneally injected with 0.3mg/10g of MMI at intervals of 24 hours for 4 days before pregnancy and the same dose of MMI was readministered on the 12th day after gestation. The dams were sacrificed on the 18th day after gestation. Thirty-three fetuses were affected with cleft lip or palate in the harvested 137 fetuses. The incidence of cleft was 24%. Twenty-five females were used for a control group. Twenty-eight fetuses were affected with cleft lip or palate in the harvested 138 fetuses. The incidence of spontaneous cleft formation in the control group was 20%. Although the comparison of the cleft incidence in both groups might lead to concluding MMI could induce cleft lip or palate, the histological pictures of the fetuses in the experimental group were the same as those in the control group. Therefore the following interpretation would be preferable. MMI may not have directly induced cleft lip or palate, but it could have made the dams more susceptible to viral infection than the control group, then the affected parts of embryos' lip or palate underwent degeneration which resulted in post-fusion rupture in the lip and/or palate.
