Abstract : [Summary] Dental examination made in an asylum for severely handicapped persons in a suburb of Sapporo where dental management had never been made revealed the following matters. 1) We found 156 deciduous teeth in 28 subjects of 3 to 25 years. While the percentage of df persons, the percentage of df teeth and the per capita number of carious teeth were 92.9%, 52.7% and 4.6 respectively, our subjects had never received dental treatment. 2) We examined a total of 1,871 permanent teeth of 75 subjects of 5 to 31 years. The percentage of DMF persons, the percentage of DMF teeth and the per capita number of carious teeth were 97.3%, 43.9% and 10.9 respectively. The percentage of treated teeth to the total examined teeth was very low (0.3%), which proves that handicapped persons have almost never received dental treatment and have been excluded from dental treatment. 3) As to brushing, we judged 19 subjects (23.8%) bad and 52 subjects (65.0%) considerably bad. It seems that although they were brushing their teeth after every meal according to the schedule of the asylum, their oral cavity became filthy because of improper brushing. 4) We found slight gingivitis in 51 subjects (63.7%) and serious gingivitis in 21 subjects (26.3%): a total of 72 subjects (90%) suffered from gingivitis, and the incidence of gingivitis was very high. 5) We found an abnormal habit (pica, licking, clenching, tongue habits, finger sucking, lip biting, etc.) in 56 subjects (70%). 6) As to occlusal relationship, dentition, upper or lower jawbone and occlusion, we found abnormality in 60 subjects (75%). Many of them suffered from protrusion, open bite or crowding. 7) We found enamel hypoplasia meaning deformity of the teeth or abnormal calcification in 57 teeth of 10 subjects, and malformation (microtooth, cone-shaped tooth, etc.) in 18 teeth of 8 subjects. We found attrition in 35 permanent teeth and 64 deciduous teeth of 10 subjects (12.5%).
