Abstract : Recently, it has been noted that cultured osteoblasts are able to produce collagen, a component of bone matrix, and synthesize collagenase and collagenase inhibitor. We have already reported that osteoblast-like cells have the ability of phagocytizing and digesting extracellular collagen fibrils in the osteoid in vitro. The purpose of this study is to examine electron microscopically whether osteoblasts in a culture system near newly formed calcified bone matrix have the ability of phagocytizing calcified matrix. Calvaria of 17-20-day-old mouse (ICR strain) embryos were dissected and the periostea were removed from both sides of the calvaria.
