Abstract : [Introduction] It is well known that venous valves at the light microscopic level consist of folds of endothelium, which are continuous with those of the lumen and are supported by bundles of collagen fibrils. There have been very few reports on the ultrastructure of valves. In their place, lymphatic valves have been used because of easier treatments, resulting from their frequency of appearance. In rabbits and mice, Takada (1971) reported the existence of endothelial cells having a pseudopod-like projection along the edge of the lymph valves. He named them "tip cells" and differentiated them morphologically from the other endothelium. On the other hand, Takahashi et al. (1985) reported a similar structure in the venous valves of the dog palate tissue, noting the difference in the distributive density of intracytoplasmic filaments (60-80A in diameter) from the other endothelium. Based upon the knowledge reported by both Takada and Takahashi et al., the objective of this study is to examine the venous valves, impressed completely by the vascular cast method and the surface ultrastructure of the "tip cell" with the specific pseudopod-like projection which have been reported in the ultrathin section technique.
