Abstract : [Abstract] CL/Fr mouse fetuses, ranging in age from 14 to 19 days, were studied to find the location of developing muscles, the distribution of myosin-ATPase reaction-positive substance and the developmental state of contractile elements all in the palatal shelves. The result of the study indicated that no myosin was present in the mesenchymal cells in regions 2 and 3 and that the presence of myosin in region 1 of the palatal shelves just prior to elevation of the shelves was related to the developing TVP muscle. It is known that TVP muscle fibrils appear in human embryos after elevation of the palatal shelves takes place. Therefore, a trigger mechanism theory of TVP muscle for elevation of the palatal shelves is not acceptable, provided that elevation of the palatal shelf starts caudally and proceeds rostrally.
