Abstract : | The term forensic odontology dates back to Dr.Oscar Amoedo's thesis Dentistry in Legal Medicine written in French and published in 1898. Dr.Amoedo is considered as the founder of this subject of study. In Japan, the first to use this term was Dr.Umejiro Yamamura of Takayama Dental Academy (now Tokyo Dental College) in his lecture titled "Forensic Odontology", given before members of the National Medical Society at Tokyo Imperial University (now University of Tokyo) in 1899. At that time, this subject was only treated as part of legal medicine. However, after a lapse of 87 years, forensic odontology has come to encompass many different aspects explored in keeping with the constant progress in natural science. |
