Abstract　： [Abstract] A new imaging system for the dental field that combines recent advances in both electronic and computer technologies has been developed. It is a panoramic tomography process based on the newly developed laser-scan system. Images obtained by this present method is visually compared with those obtained by the conservative screen film method. Enhancement processing of the gingival margin and alveolar crest is also performed. The results are as follows: 1) A digital data analysis enables various image information processing (enhancement of the alveolar crest and gingival margin), demonstrating the usefulness of this system in the epidemiological study of periodontal disease; 2) The system enhances the prognostic accuracy for occurrence of periodontal disease after therapy because images of a high diagnostic quality can be obtained at a low exposure dose; and 3) The system enables better understanding of the relationship between periodontal disease and bone trabeculation. The above findings show the value of the present system in diagnosing periodontal disease.
