Abstract : [Abstract] One hundred and forty-three CL/Fr mouse embryos and fetuses ranging in age from 13 days to full term and six newborn mice were used to study the development of Chievitz's organ. The following results were obtained. 1) The organ arises from the oral epithelium of the corner of the mouth at the level of the future first molar bud on 13 days after gestation, 2) The organ's anlage soon loses its connection with the oral epithelium completely, 3) It forms a long solid epithelial cord, which runs anterio-posteriorly in the buccal mesenchyme, 4) It increases in size, but no lumen is formed even in the newborn mouse, 5) It is a ductless organ in which no regression is visible and develops closely related to the buccal nerve, 6) The anlage of the parotid gland first appears as an epithelial ingrowth from the corner of the mouth at the level somewhat mesial to the first molar bud on 14 days after gestation, 7) The anlage of the parotid and that of Chievitz's organ are located so closely that the anlage of Chievitz's organ tends to be mistaken for the anlage of the parotid, but they are never united, and 8) Chievitz's organ becomes 800 to 920μm in length in the newborn mouse.
