Abstract : | [Introduction] An artificial bone implantation in periodontal surgical therapy has been increasing in recent years. Among the types of artificial bone, calcium phosphate ceramics, such as hydroxyapatite (HAP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), have been highly evaluated from a clinical viewpoint. Although there are reports of denial that these materials are not effective for bone induction, they have also been reported to show favorable histocompatibility. Both materials have been sufficiently analyzed for their individual tissue reactions in experimental studies. There are, however, few reports on the in vivo comparison of both materials, particularly with regard to their time-course tissue reactions when it is under similar conditions using large size of animals. In the present study, the time-course reaction of periodontal tissue to both materials was compared histopathologically, and the main differences are described in the following. [Materials and Methods] The materials for implantation were dense hydroxyapatite granules and tricalcium phosphate granules (the diameter for both granules, 300μm; burning temperature at 900℃). |
