Abstract : [Introduction] Organisms in the plaque and intraoral bacteria have been shown to activate serum complement through both the classical and alternative pathways. On the other hand, LPS, a complement activator present in the periodontal tissue, may invade from the gingival crevice and the epithelium of the internal margin of the pocket and activate the complement in the gingiva through the alternative or classical pathway. Studies have revealed that Actinomyces viscosus (Av) used in the present study activates the complement through the classical pathway or alternative pathway, or both. In the present study, we injected an LPS solution or a solution of sonicated Av cells serially into the guinea pig gingiva and examined the differences in their effects on the variation of serum complement levels (CH50 and C3 protein). In addition, we conducted a histological examination of morphologic changes in inflammatory lesions of the periodontal tissue at the injection site in order to analyze the effects of the two bacterial components on alveolar bone resorption.
