Abstract : | During the past several years, the authors have reevaluated the changing patterns or trends in occlusal concepts. Currently, more attention has been focused on the TMJ function in the stomatognathic system. For a review of historical developments in the occlusal concepts, the authors apply the concept of "the third wave" by Toffler to our evaluation. Namely, he described the changing patterns of human societies as the first, second and the third developmental stages. The third stage is the current "Age of Computer" and hitechnology. This is considered as a large-scale synthesis of these social changes. From an aspect of re-evaluation of the historical trends in the occlusal concepts, the authors accept this philosophy for a historical stage of developmental changes up to the present stage. Fig.1 shows a result of our historical review in the occlusal concepts. In progressing from the "first wave" stage toward the current stage, there have been tremendous efforts and accomplishments of years ago and still valid today. |
